For elementary and middle School-Age students
Welcome to the Concert is a free Masterworks Concert activity for elementary and middle school-age students during intermission. It provides useful tools to enhance the concert experience.
The Harrisburg Symphony’s Education Department prepares lesson plans, informative hand-outs, and a mini-workshop for each young concert-goer who wishes to attend. The program is presented in the lobby of the Forum, outside section 309.
Recent Welcome to the Concert activities have included:
- making and decorating violins
- creating bandanas with repetitive patterns to celebrate the performance of Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid Suite
- creating the floral tribute bouquet presented on-stage to a guest soloist
- painting a 15-foot mural with beautiful scenes (reminiscent of the majestic landscape depicted in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3.)
Often a highlight of the 15-20 minute Welcome to the Concert session is a visit with one of the musicians or the guest artist.
Families are also drawn to the HSO’s Masterworks concerts because the Symphony offers a deeply discounted subscription for the entire season. The Musical Chairs program offers a $42 per seat subscription for families with school-age (K-12) children.
