The purpose of the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestras is to enrich the lives of young people within a musical community.  We provide the finest possible training, practice and performance opportunities, enabling our students to learn, share and enjoy the power of music.

Tango Caliente

We transform the Forum stage into a sizzling hot dance floor as the Pops season opens with a program of fiery tangos performed by award-winning dancers from Argentina, singer Camille Zamora and internationally-acclaimed bandoneón artist, Hector Del Curto

On the first half, one of Rossini’s most delightful overtures is followed by Ravel’s exquisite orchestral suite and the World Premiere of a new piano concerto by Christopher Theofanidis. After intermission, Beethoven 5!

This Masterworks includes two very different takes on the waltz, one by Viennese composer, Johann Strauss, the other by the Frenchman, Maurice Ravel. After intermission, listen to the monumental 11th Symphony of Shostakovich, subtitled "The Year 1905."

Richard Strauss’s last tone poem finds the composer at his most descriptive as he takes us on an ascent, and then a descent, of an imposing mountain peak. The two most popular scores by Alan Hovhaness and Aaron Copland complete the alpine-themed program.

In March, HSO Principal Oboe Andreas Oeste performs Strauss’s late masterpiece, the beautiful Oboe Concerto from 1945. To open the program, Stuart shows off the HSO’s virtuoso strings and then closes with one of Mozart’s greatest symphonies.

French composer Francis Poulenc’s choral masterpiece, Gloria, is performed along with music by Korngold (best known for his brilliant film scores from Hollywood’s “Golden Age”), Villa-Lobos and Prokofiev.

Our season concludes with the ever-popular New World Symphony by Dvorák. On the first half, English composer Arnold Bax’s atmospheric musical portrait of the Tintagel castle on England’s Cornwall coast, plus a new violin concerto by Jonathan Leshnoff.
